In each country where we work, we support a programme covering
project activities in two to three sectors. All project activities are
run by local partner organisations that we support with seed funds,
training, coaching technical advice, knowledge sharing, advocacy and
lobbying activities.
In 2010, IICD:
-
Supported programmes in 9 countries: Bolivia, Burkina Faso,
Ecuador, Ghana, Malawi, Mali, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. The
programme in Jamaica was closed in 2010 because the ICT initiatives
developed there with IICD were able to continue independently. Due to a
change in strategic focus the Ecuador programme was also rounded off in
2010.
-
Worked in 5 sectors: (agricultural) livelihoods, education,
health, governance and environment.
-
Supported 111 projects on the ground, 14 expansion
programmes and 8 policy processes. This is in line with our
strategy and similar to 2009. Over 54% of these projects and programmes
now continue independently without financial support from IICD. Due to
a lack of interest, or insufficient progress, 10 projects ceased
operations, representing less than 10 per cent of our total project
portfolio.
-
Reached 830,000 people who actively use the information or
facilities of our work and 6.1 million people who benefited
indirectly. Compared to 2009, when we reached 813,000 end-users and
5.9 million beneficiaries, our outreach was less than what we aimed
for. This is mainly because 2010 was a year of transition. Preparations
for the new strategic plan period took more time than expected which
unfortunately affected the work in the countries.
-
Targeted teachers, students, school managers, civil servants, NGO
staff, policy makers, doctors, nurses, patients, hospital managers,
farmers, entrepreneurs, traders, women, youth, and indigenous people.
The majority lived in rural areas, had a low income and a generally low
education level. This reflects IICD’s deliberate policy of reaching
out to the neediest people in the different countries with a
particular focus on women and youth.
